How long does domain registration take?
Most .co.ke, .ke, and global TLD registrations are active within minutes of payment. DNS propagation — making the domain reachable worldwide — can take up to 24 hours. Domains requiring document verification (.ac.ke, .sc.ke) take longer while KENIC reviews the submitted documents.
Which extensions need supporting documents?
Only .ac.ke (universities and colleges — needs a certificate of registration or charter), .sc.ke (schools — needs a Ministry of Education certificate), and .go.ke (government — needs an ICTA authority letter) require supporting documents verified by KENIC. All other .ke extensions — including .co.ke, .ke, .or.ke, .me.ke, .ne.ke, and .info.ke — are straightforward registrations with no documents needed. Source: KENIC.
Can I transfer my existing domain to Shika Cloud?
Yes. Start a domain transfer from your workspace dashboard. You will need the EPP code (authorization code) from your current provider. Unlock the domain at your current registrar first — transfers complete within 5-7 days after approval.
What happens if my domain expires?
Expired domains enter a grace period during which you can still renew at the standard price. After the grace period, the domain enters a redemption phase with higher recovery costs. If not renewed during redemption, the domain is released back to the registry and becomes available for anyone to register. We send renewal reminders before expiry.
Do I own my domain or am I renting it?
You hold exclusive rights to the domain for the period you have paid for. As long as you renew on time, the domain remains yours. It is a renewable right — similar to a lease — not a one-time purchase. KENIC's registry records you as the registrant for the duration of your registration.
Can someone take my domain name if I registered it first?
Generally, no — as long as you renew on time and the domain was not registered in bad faith. However, if your domain matches a registered trademark owned by someone else and was registered to exploit that trademark, KENIC's Alternative Dispute Resolution Policy (ADRP) allows the trademark owner to file a dispute.
